Before I get started, two things:
1) I have to say, once again, if you don't want to get the newly formed Divorce Dirt rant, please feel free to 'unsubscribe' at the bottom of the email - I understand you signed up for an entirely different celeb blog, and this has taken a couple of forms since then, so I will not take offense! And if you want "the headlines" that are now on email, please reply to this and I will happily add you to that distribution.
2) I am 10 hours away from my final divorce court appearance, so I'm not able to be fun(ny) tonight, but instead feel like relfecting on a few things that i've been thinking about the past few days.
My divorce court appearance is tomorrow at 9am, and it's 11:30pm the night prior. AND I AM A WRECK!
I went out with an awesome buddy of mine last night, with her guy and another couple, and I was just fine being a 5th wheel. In fact, it felt great to get out of my cocoon for a change and I think I did pretty well. Then spent the night at her house and woke up this morning needing to drive out of the mountains early before a crazy snow storm hit the Northeast.
Well, I was 30 minutes into my hour drive home when the light rain started and quickly formed ICE on the highway. My rear wheel drive Honda S2000 is less than equipped to drive in any inclement weather, so I started to freak out. And who is the only person who knows my car and knows how to drive in this weather?
Yes, of course it's the "soon to be" ex. For 15+ years, he's been the one to call to get advice on how to handle normal life situations. If he weren't around, do we think I could have handled it on my own? TOTALLY!!! But sometimes moral support and emotional guidance is what is really needed. And this is one thing that I am terrified of not having as "Single Patti."
So I called him...crying like a baby on the phone, freaking out. He talked me down from the ledge and guided me to a safe, secure location where I waited out the storm until the temperature heated up above freezing. I won't get into the fact that two hours later I locked my key in the trunk of my car and I needed to call him crying my eyes out again and made him drive an hour out of his way to bring my spare, but let's just say it happened, and I've been crying my eyes out for the rest of the afternoon. In front of him...while he finishes packing his chit. After the past few months, there is no doubt in my mind that he will only remember me as hysterical crying Patti and won't ever remember the happy Patti, fun girl that I think I used to be. Good times.
But the drama of the day lead to me think about our life together, and the only things I can remember right now are the good times, not the bad. So below is a list of things that I will miss about life as I have known it for the majority of my adulthood. As much as I want to hate him, he's the most wonderful guy I could have ever asked for in my life and has been my best friend for 15+ years. So here is a list of just a few things that I will miss about him, in no particular order:
- He's one of the smartest guys I've ever met, with book smarts and also street smarts, so he brings a different (and always intelligent) angle to every situation.
- He has "Big American Teeth" (quote from our British friend, Justin) and a great smile that lights up a room.
- He was always fun.
- He was always funny.
- He would do anything for my mom, and would let me do anything for her, no questions asked.
- My niece was his niece, and probably one of his most favorite people in the world.
- He is awesome at his job - perhaps a contributor to the downfall of our marriage, but a reason I loved him, nonetheless.
- He was always up for the crazy trips I would plan.
- He was so much fun to travel with and loved when I found those old school hot apple pies in foreign countries (they used to serve at McDonald's in the U.S. back in the day, but we found them at Wendy's in Greece and McDonald's in Costa Rica, for instance). He laughed at me for it, but he knew it was such a treat to find.
- He was always up for whatever trip I wanted to take, whatever party I wanted to have, whatever sport I wanted to try. He always seemed excited about the crazy crap I came up with.
- There were many years where he would look at me, and I knew he adored me even if I was nasty and sweaty and didn't have any make up on. He had that look in his eye and I felt so very loved when he looked at me like that.
- He let me be me.
So there you have it. Reasons why we were married for over 12 years. Nights like tonight I forget why we're getting divorced, so that's the hardest part. There are many reasons, I know, but they're not always front & center.
Nothing funny tonight, I'm sorry. But in case anyone is going through a rough patch, I recommend taking inventory of all the good things in your relationship and appreciating the small stuff for a little bit.
